Sahil Özberkman

Case

Gazimagusa Turkish Maarif College (GMTMK) Star Girls Volleyball Team player Champion Angel Sahil, was part of the team representing the TRNC in Adıyaman to participate in the Turkey Secondary School Star Girls Semi-Final matches between 3rd - 9th of February 2023, following her team’s success in the TRNC Championship. Unfortunately, she lost her life when she was trapped under the rubble at the earthquake that occurred in the early hours of 6th of February 2023.

Sahil Ozberkman was born on 18th of June 2011, in Famagusta. She was the daughter of Esra and Tayip Ozberkman and the younger sister of Sarp Ozberkman. She began her education at Polatpasa Primary School and passed the entry exam of the Gazimagusa Turkish Maarif College in 2022.

Sahil was a real Gemini girl. She could cry one moment and laugh the next, and she usually laughed a lot. She was very sensitive to nature and animals. She was a very cheerful, lively, energetic child. Now, without her, the house is very quiet and feels empty...

Sahil was a child who knew her responsibilities and was not afraid to take them on. This trait made her primary school teachers proud. Sahil, who took part in many activities in primary school, always fulfilled all the tasks she was given perfectly.

She also loved to dance and could dance anywhere. She would play upbeat songs and dance with her friends on the way to trainings for matches.

In primary school, her nickname was "tatil" (in English "vacation"). She loved to travel. She was a Harry Potter fan. She wanted to go to England to see both the Harry Potter Museum and the London Eye, and she was making plans for the summer of 2023.

Her favorite foods: Whenever she had the chance, she would ask her grandmothers (father’s mother) for bumbar and (mother’s mother) for baked pasta.

She had pet fish. She fed and talked to them everyday. She always wanted a dog, but couldn’t get one because her home wasn’t suitable.

Sahil and Asya were very good friends from birth, like siblings. They claimed to be twins. They wanted to become architects together when they grew up. Their lives were stolen from them in that damn hotel, as they were cuddled up in the same bed...

Her interest in volleyball began when her brother also started playing volleyball. This interest after a short while turned into a passion. Sahil, who also played volleyball on the school team at Polatpasa Primary School, had started on this path from a young age. Sahil, the number 6, continued on this familiar path with great passion and commitment at Gazimagusa Turkish Maarif College. Despite her young age, she was a very confident child, and this trait gave her a maturity beyond her age. Her role model on the team was Serin and she was also a fan of the Sultans of the Net.

In line with her aim to be a good volleyball player, Sahil also played volleyball at the Magusa Development Academy in order to achieve her goal. Sahil had big dreams for herself. She achieved another goal by coming in second with her team in the 2022-2023 U12 Girls League organized by the Volleyball Federation, and she was also proud of this accomplishment.

Sahil was also talented at painting. One of her painting work was awarded with a prize in a painting competition organized by the Magusa Cultural Association.

After what had happened, like many of her other works, the rainbow canvas that Sahil had started painting was also left unfinished...
